For instance, whole romaine lettuce will last longer than washed baby spinach or spring mix. In the same way, bananas will rot long before whole apples. This prioritized list allows you to serve the freshest food and avoid throwing out food that has rotted.

For instance, most recipes for portobello mushrooms involve removing the gills and stem. Rather than discard these, I chop them finely, add them to black beans, and create a batch of decadent portobello black bean burgers.

Vegetable scraps can be used to make vegetable broth. After making broth, some of the leftover scraps can be pulsed in the food processor and used in making garden herb crackers, fritters, biscuits, or for thickening soups.

Use your discretion with this. However, many other items can, indeed, be used one more time. Many plants will regrow when placed in water in a sunny place. Alternately, you can also plant the root end in your garden for regrowth. For romaine lettuce, cut it down to about an inch of the bottom, stick this stem into a shallow bowl of water, and change the water once a day.

It needs to get some sunlight. Yes, in the winter, a window will work. When the leaves are a few inches long, harvest them and then, let it regrow again. It is so easy to set aside a corner of your yard to compost food scraps and yard waste. As it decomposes, it creates a nutrient rich soil for use in your yard and garden.

Many varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs can be frozen for later use. This means that those green beans, ignored in the back of the fridge, once destined for the trash bin in four days, are now blanched and in the freezer, ready to be used anytime in the next twelve months.

Lili, I'm so impressed by the mark-down deals you find, not just on dairy but on other products as well. I don't think any of the groceries here mark down fresh food at all.

Sometimes I'm bummed when I see the deals that others find, but we do get a lot of good sales and I am able to combine that with come of the tactics you mention above to feel like I come out ahead.

We are not huge milk drinkers, although I like to keep milk on hand for recipes and breakfasts and so on. Occasionally this means that the last up or so in the container sours I have always, always used that for pancakes or crumb cake or similar.

I was really surprised when some of my friends didn't know that it was ok to us soured milk. I had to explain that I'm not cooking with grotto, moldy milk. In that case I definitely go beyond the stated expiration date, usually by a couple of weeks with no problem.

I like to keep Greek yogurt on hand, too, and have subbed those for one another but frankly I much prefer sour cream. I always storemy butter directly in the freezer; I don't like to pay more than I have to for it which means I really stock up during.

The holiday sales. When I have small it's and bobs of cheese lying around I like to make up a simple cheese sauce--sometimes there is enough for Mac and cheese other times we just have it over toast or potatoes. Sorry for the typos -- I'm writing this on my tablet and it doesn't like me trying for corrections!

Hi Laura, It sounds like you've found lot of ways to maximize your savings on groceries even without much in the way of markdowns! Great job! How funny that some of your friends didn't think you could use soured milk in cooking.

Like you said, it's not like you were using really disgusting milk, just something not so palatable for drinking. Kind of like not wanting t use an old wrinkly apple in applesauce! I used a bunch of wrinkly apples this week in homemade apples -- they'd be less than palatable to eat fresh, but made great sauce.

Good ideas with different foods for cheese sauce. And great way to use those last lingering bits of cheese! Thanks for your comments and ideas!
